Getting A Sak Yant Tattoo In Wat Bang Phra

Yesterday, me and my friend Mercede got up at the crack of dawn, and made our way over to Wat Bang Phra, a temple about an hour away from the centre of Bangkok.

Here, we waited for 4 hours for the chance to be tattooed in this ancient sacred tradition.

We were both blessed with the Gao Yord Yant or 9 Spires Yant at the base of our necks.

Wat Bang Phra is a Buddhist monastery that teaches the art of Sak Yant for years, passed down from teacher to student.

When you receive a Sak Yant, you won’t get to pick the design or where it goes on the body. Traditionally, the monk, or teacher, will read your aura, and bless you with a tattoo based upon that aura.

The Gao Yord is usually the first Sak Yant you receive, and after that, all other Sak Yants are based upon what the monk tattooing you thinks you need. I.e. good luck, protection etc.

Do It Yourself

If you’re in Bangkok, and want to get a Sak Yant, it’s simple enough to do.

All the Tuk Tuk drivers know about the temple so you can pretty much ask any Tuk Tuk driver to take you there and back. They’ll charge you between 1,000 baht and 1,200 baht.

Remember, even though you may get bestowed a tattoo on your back or shoulder, this is still a temple, and you need to dress appropriately. Make sure your shoulders and knees are covered. Maybe take a scarf or sarong to cover your shoulders, but still allowing the monk access to your back.

Once you reach the temple, you’ll need to buy an offering for the monks, which consists of flowers, cigarettes, candles, incense and a small cash donation.

After that, it’s your choice if you would like to donate money to the monk who will bless you with a tattoo.

Most people tend to give around 100 baht ($3.50), but I would highly recommend donating more if you can afford it. The monks are blessing you with a tattoo to bring you luck for the rest of your life, a donation of more than $3.50 is appropriate and appreciated.

You’ll wait for your turn, and once your called up, bow to the monk. He’ll then decide where and what tattoo he wants to bestow on you.

Usually there will be people either side of you holding your skin taunt, to help assist the monk.

imgp4814

Ladies, please remember that the monk cannot touch you, so bear that in mind. If he needs part of your clothing to move, you, or another female will have to do so as the monk cannot touch your skin.

The instrument used is usually a large metal rod, with a bamboo needle at the end.

Here’s a little warning…

It hurts! Be prepared for some pain!

Once the tattoo is completed, the monk or teacher will blow on the tattoo and bestow you with a blessing which activates the power of the tattoo.

Once this is done, make sure to thank and bow before the monk.

You now have your first Sak Yant!

Within the many temples of Wat Bang Phra, you can meet some master monks, who will again bless your tattoo.

Each year after your tattoo, make sure you get it blessed by a Buddhist monk, to keep the tattoo magic alive.

Remember, this is a sacred tradition in Thailand, and should not be taken lightly. After receiving a Sak Yant, there are a list of rules to follow in order to bring luck, so make sure you do your research.

The main theme of the rules is to be a good Buddhist… do good to others, and do not sin.

Good luck!

Getting a Bamboo Tattoo in Pai

Since first reading about bamboo tattoo’s, I knew I had to have one, problem is, what!?

I knew I wanted to get a fallen angel on my leg, but for some reason that didn’t seem right for the bamboo tattoo. Maybe because the Angel signifies so much more than what a bamboo tattoo would for me.

A bamboo tattoo would represent my courage for being in Thailand, my adventureous side for being on the trip, and a memory I’ll always be able to look at.

The Angel, for me, signifies my battle with depression and how it won’t hold me back any longer, that I’ll always get out the other side, no matter how bleak the world may seem.

So I got to thinking… What should I get for my bamboo tattoo… And then it hit me… Ying and Yang…

I’ve always resonated with the theory of karma and Ying and Yang, so this seemed perfect, but I didn’t want just any Ying and Yang… I decided to have mine in a lions face…

Meet Leo, yes, I named him;

4 hours of being repeatedly stabbed with a bamboo needle and here he is.

Both black and white ink, this beauty is a true work of art with created with a skill like nothing I’ve ever seen!

I got this done at Space 2 Bamboo Tattoo in Pai (Northern Thailand). Adam, the artist was fantastic. Making sure I was okay, joking around with me.

I was always so eager to see my tattoo I was constantly early to my appointments, which he honestly never had a problem with. He created my stencil in a matter of days.

I still remember seeing it for the first time… The minute detail, the dot work, shading… I was blown away! I couldn’t believe he’d drawn that, let alone be able to tattoo it! It far passed my expectations!

The thing wth bamboo tattoo’s… They heal within hours… Which Is perfect for when you’re in 30degree heat and want to jump in a pool.

They do cost more than a normal tattoo, but the extra buck is well worth it for the experience… Well, from what I can remember… I mean… I did fall asleep during it

How!? You ask… Well, after getting your ribs done, nothing else really compares… Also the first hour your skin is still pretty untouched so it doesn’t hurt too much. After that… All bets are off.

By the time he added the white colour at the end I was in agony, ready to call it a night.

Why is it, we always forget how painful the tattoo is until we’re in the chair and by then it’s too late!?

Tattoos are so addictive, you could literally be sitting there in agony, still planning out the next tattoo after this one!

We (people with tattoos) are straight up insane!

I have my next one booked in for Boxing Day, and though I’m super excited for this Christmas present for myself, I am so not looking forward to the pain… In fact, I think I’m actively blocking the thought of  how much it would hurt!

But, I digress. If you’re thinking of getting a tattoo in thailand, I strongly urge you to head to Pai and get a bamboo tattoo! There are so many amazing artists and studios in Pai, in the one month I’ve been here, I’ve never seen a bad tattoo!

And considering I’ve seen, on average 3 people a day get a new tattoo that’s saying a lot!

Tattoo’s…Piercings…Oh My!

Recently I got a tattoo and quite a few piercings, as everyone keeps asking me about it I thought I’d write about my experience here, as it seems to be a topic of interest…

What’s the tattoo?

The tattoo is for my mum, and it’s something that I’ve wanted for years. When she used to tuck me in (for I’m not going to admit how many years!) she used to say the same thing each night;

Goodnight,
Sleep Tight,
Sweet Dreams,
See You In the Morning,
I Love You.

Whenever she said this, I never had a bad dream, whenever I was away on a school trip or at a friend’s house she’d text it to me, and as it happens, those were the last words I ever said to her… yeah, turns out I’m a sap – don’t tell anyone!

So I decided to get that, surrounded by lilies which were her favourite flower.

img_1760

The other tattoo is “Darling” which is what I called my mum, as she was my Mother Darling…

Where are the tattoo’s?

So the Goodnight, Sleep tight is on my ribs, the lilies are on my stomach and back, and the Darling is on my wrist…

Where did you get them done?

At a sweet tattoo studio in Bromley called Valhalla… the lovely Sarah Sparkes did my tattoo’s and I couldn’t be happier with them! Seriously guys, I totally recommend this place if you’re looking for a tattoo, especially you’re first. It’s intimidating going into a tattoo studio usually, but at Valhalla, they’re so lovely I instantly felt welcome! And they totally take care of newbies like me!

Sarah was amazing when tattooing me, she was so open and honest about what to expect, and was happy work around me. If I needed a break, she was more than happy to give me a break, and was always checking in with me to see how I was doing!

Were you scared about the pain?

Nah… I honestly didn’t think of it! I wanted the tattoo too much, and I knew it was going to hurt, so I didn’t bother to think about the pain which was inevitable. I imagine that’s what it’s like when you’re pregnant… you know there’s going to be pain, but what’s the point in thinking about it!? Not that having a tattoo is anything like giving birth… well I hope at least!!

Did it hurt?

Bloody hell, yes! I got my ribs done first, which killed! As it was on my ribs I had to lay on my side with my arm over my head which is not the comfiest of positions. I think it wouldn’t have been so bad if I were laying on my front or back, but because I had to hold the position which isn’t that natural I think it made it more uncomfortable.

The first hour I was doing okay, I mean yeah, it hurt, but it was bearable. The last half an hour though… oh… my… god… As the skin was already raw from the outline, the shading on my ribs hurt like a mother!

Sarah was really lovely though, she could tell I was struggling and offered me breaks whenever I needed one!

The pain was so bad, but it was so worth it for how my tattoo looks, and how amazing it makes me feel! It feels as though I have a piece of my mum with me all the time now, and I couldn’t be happier! Getting my back tattooed wasn’t too bad, but my stomach and ribs were horrible! Never again!

My wrist barely hurt after that – it burned a little, but not even worthy of clenching my muscles to fight the pain! I could also see what she was tattooing on my wrist so could see how far along she was, whereas on my ribs, back and stomach I was blind, so had no idea how long was left!

imgp1830

Would you get any other tattoo’s?

Hell yeah! Already got my next 3 planned out – they’re so addictive! They all mean something to me, and represent a time in my life, past, present and future.

Will you regret it?

How can I regret something that represents my mum, and the love I had for her, and the love she had for me? That, for me is what my tattoo’s represent, and all future tattoos represent my friends, family and life as I’ve gone through different trials, and have still come out the other end fighting. I can’t regret what made the person I am today…

Why all the piercings?

Now here’s where it gets a little deep and philosophical… I’ve been stuck in limbo since August… will or won’t my mum survive… will or won’t she make a recovery… when will it be the end to her suffering?

Not being able to truly live as I was always worrying about my mum, and had to be ready to drop all plans at a moment’s notice to be there for her.

Once she passed, I thought Limbo would be over… but it wasn’t… I was then in Limbo over my job… the house… when I can leave… Everything in my life felt so out of my control, but there was one thing I could control… my appearance.

You know how when you go through a bad breakup, you go out and drastically cut your hair, partly to prove to yourself you’re a different person, a daredevil, that you won’t be hindered, and partly due to the fact that you need a change from the oppressive feelings of hopelessness…

…Well, instead of getting a hair cut, I got pierced… nothing drastic, just a small nose stud and a few piercings in my ear, something that made me feel like a different person, like I’m no longer living in Limbo, like I’m becoming me…

I’m not sure if it’s a long term solution, but it’s sure cheered me up in the short-term! No regrets!

Getting a Tattoo In Rome

Destiny… Fate… Call it what you want, but when you know, you know.

And that’s how I ended up getting a tattoo in Rome with 2 other girls I’d known for 24 hours.

I was having a difficult time in Rome, experiencing my first travelling low and dealing with the crippling grief of losing my mum, I somehow managed to make a couple of great friends right when I needed it.

We instantly bonded, and we knew this wasn’t a coincidence. It was fate… Destiny…

Some of you are probably reading this thinking I’m whacked out of my head, that’s fine, I’d probably think the same if there weren’t so many signs that pushed me towards getting this tattoo.

13575951_10154466668432518_5160118534357762477_oAfter spending a couple of hours scouring the net for a sign of destiny or fate, we couldn’t really find one we liked, until we came across a symbol on Pinterest.

We couldn’t find out if it was the official meaning of destiny, but that small symbol represented so much more to us. It became unique to us, despite not being a very original tattoo.

To us, it represents destiny and friendship. That you’ll always get through life’s trials, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and every cloud has a silver lining, no matter how small and bleak it may seem.

We went to one tattoo parlour near the Vatican, but they were so rude, we decided against it. After making us wait 20 mins for the tattooist who spoke English fluently (despite us explaining exactly what we wanted, showing them a picture and everything) they then tried to make us wait a further hour…

After such bad customer service, we decided to cut our loses and leave it. The place didn’t exactly give us the warm fuzzies, and when marking your body for life, you want to trust your tattooist!

So we left and decided to hop on a bus and head to another Tattoo shop that came up on Google maps… this place was called Kiss Me Darlin’.

For me, this was another sign. I called my mum Darling for years, she was my Mother Darling – heck I even have Darling tattooed on my wrist! This was it!

We entered the parlour, and what was song was playing… Metallica… Nothing Else Matters… only one of my favourite songs in the world!

The staff were so friendly and welcoming, chatting and laughing with us. Our tattooist Stefano was so lovely! The signs kept building up, so I thought Fuck It, and got myself a new tattoo with my new friends!

Here’s to a long life of friendships, fate, fun and fuck it’s…
